TOPSOIL FACTS
Why is topsoil necessary for a healthy lawn and garden?
Topsoil is the upper layer of material, usually the top 2 inches (5.1 cm) to 8 inches (20 cm). It has the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms. Most plants will concentrate their roots in and obtain most of their nutrients from this layer.
How much soil is needed for a healthy lawn?
Four inches of good topsoil is recommended for a healthy lawn
How much soil is needed for a vegatable garden?
Eight to ten inches of good topsoil will allow the vegatable roots to thrive.
How can I calculate the amount of topsoil needed to occomplish my project?
In order to fiqure out the amount of cubic yards required, first we must measure the length and width and depth of the project's area. Once these measurements have been established, we then take the length measurement and times it with the width measurement. Then we take that total and times it by the depth measurement. This will give us the cubic footage of the area. Now all we have to do is devide the number by 27 and that will give you the cubic yardage of topsoil needed.
Example: Length = 10ft Width = 50ft
10FT * 50FT = 500 square feet
Depth = 6 inches 6/12 = .50
500 * .50 = 250 CUBIC FEET
Now we will calculate yardage.
250 / 27 =9.3 cubic yards
We will be glad to assist you in calculating
ONE CUBIC YARD WILL COVER:
I INCH DEEP WILL COVER 300 SQ. FT. ( 30 FT BY 10 FT )
2 INCHES DEEP WILL COVER 150 SQ. FT. ( 15 FT BY 10 FT )
3 INCHES WILL COVER 75 SQ. FT. ( 7.5 FT BY 10 FT }
4 INCHES WILL COVER 37.5 SQ. FT. (7.5 FT BY 5 FT )
